A)Purpose
The purpose of this trailer is to promote the film so that it can attract the audience to watch the film, it is also made to entertain the audience, this is so it is more attracting to the audience.
B)Form
The form of this video is a film trailer, the films name is 'Dead Man's Shoes' and was directed by Shane Meadows. I know it's a film trailer because it's non-linear meaning it isn't chronological as to not spoil the film for the audience.
C/D)Content and Meaning
The mise-en-scene of one of the film's location is an apartment block, it looks like an urban area and so means that the apartment must be cheap, connoting that the characters are poor and on a low salary job. Another mise-en-scene is lighting and again is used in the apartment block to give it a gritty feel as they use poor low lighting in the apartment block's stairs, this is when revealing the protagonist in his gas mask coming for revenge and trying to kill someone, this connotes the character to look bad, but he is just trying to find out what happened to his brother. Costume is another mise-en-scene feature, which they are told to wear to create verisimilitude in the film, both antagonists and protagonists are wearing casual and non-formal clothes in the trailer, this is because the characters are representing a real person and not a person from a sci-fi film which would use prophetic for example. Finally, props are used in films and in this trailer the most symbolic prop in the film was a gun at the end of the trailer, this symbolises power, especially when the character with the gun is standing over the person, showing he is the dominant one, unfortunately this wasn't represented in a high angle shot, but a medium long shot. The sound in the film makes this trailer more dramatic than it would without and is probably one of the reasons the film attracted the audience to the film. Diegetic sound is sound in the story world, one example in this trailer is the yelling and screaming in the film which denotes that bad things are happening like the brother being tortured and the protagonist chasing after the antagonist. Then their is the sound that isn't in the story world and this is sound like incidental music, for example, at the start of the trailer their is calm guitar music playing at the start showing us a kind of equilibrium in the story and near the end it is playing dramatic choir music, this shows us that the story is tense at this point in the story, maybe the disequilibrium, but because it is non-linear it doesn't make it so it spoils the film for the audience.
Next, their is camerawork, and this is things like angles, shot types and movement. Firstly, an example of angle in the trailer is a quick snippet of a low angle view and it is when the lost brother is being beaten or tortured by a group of men and it shows him screaming and struggling, in this case it shows that he is the less dominant one as a group of men can easily overpower one man and so is showing their thee dominant ones. An example of movement is a pan shot from left to right when one of the antagonists is running away from the protagonist in the apartment block's stairs and as he turns to go up on the stairs it pans with his movement to create the effect of the audience looking at him. Finally, an example of a shot type in the film is a close up which is when its on the protagonist's face and it looks like he is cold and lonely, and this is helped by the low key lighting which may make the audience feel sympathy for him.
Then their is editing involved in the story like any other films, and these are things like an action match, shot reverse shot structure, cross-cutting, eye line match, jump cutting, title graphics and transitions. Firstly, their is an example of title graphics in the film, which is the text that appears onscreen, throughout the trailer it leaves short title graphics that give you a little more information on the story, like for example some say "A brother's love" and then "A brother's Vengeance" and they transition the word vengeance with fire inside the actual text, which connotes rage and anger and so must mean that this is what the brother feels. Finally, their is an example of a transition known as cut to white, which it does several times instantaneously creating a lightning effect.
E)Genre
This film is a hybrid of the crime, drama and thriller genres as it shows conventions of them like the music in the trailer and film is very intense causing tension in the audience is an example of the thriller genre.
F)Audience
The audience of the film is probably around the age of 18 as the thriller aspect of the film may be unsuitable for younger audiences. The gender of the audience may be the most part male also because of certain scenes in the film.
A)Purpose
The purpose of this trailer is to promote the film so that it can attract the audience to watch the film, it is also made to entertain the audience, this is so it is more attracting to the audience.
B)Form
The form of this video is a film trailer, the films name is 'This is England' and was directed by Shane Meadows. I know it's a film trailer because it's non-linear meaning it isn't chronological as to not spoil the film for the audience.
C/D)Content and Meaning
One of the locations used in the mise-en-scene is by the looks of it, is an under passage and I think that this denotes a suburban area, but connotes a dullness and a kind of grim feel as it would really be a place to hangout, especially when you can see graffiti on the walls meaning that maybe a lot of crimes happen around there Then the second mise-en-scene feature is the lighting and their is a part in the trailer where it has low key lighting and this is when the kid in the film is crying, I think the low lighting was to symbolise loneliness or that he is sad and to show that their is a dis-equilibrium in the film. The final mise-en-scene feature is props as what the character is doing with it can determine what kind of character they are, this prop is a kind of machete which one of the adult characters holds towards a shop keeper who was assaulting the kid, this denotes as the man threatening the shop keeper, but it connotes danger as a machete is very dangerous and can kill someone, so it puts the shop keeper in a dangerous position. Next is the sound in the film trailer and first an example of diegetic sound is laughter and this shows that its the equilibrium which then juxtaposes the later scene of the kid crying, an example of non-diegetic sound is incidental music which is a 1980's song which fits into the time it's set which contrast with the film trailer. Next is camera work and an example of this is Angles and one scene shows you a lower angle on an adult, which makes the adult look on the same level with the kid, this would be a binary opposition of the younger, normally weaker, being more dominant than the adult, but it looks more like the adult is getting on the same level of the kid, so the kid isn't as shy. Next is shot type and this example is a close up and this is when one of the kid's adult friends is threatening some people, and the close up was used to show the angry emotion on his face to make him look threatening. The final example of camera work is movement and an example of this in the trailer is a pan to the left, and this is when the kid is insulted by a bully and the kid runs towards the bully and it pans left, this is to show the quick movement the kid has connoting that the kid is angry or furious. Next is editing and the first example is transitioning and this is at the very start of the trailer where it fades to black, this is used to create a slow transition to the next clip that goes with the peaceful music at the start, maybe to connote that everything is alright. The next example of editing is jump cutting and this starts after it tells you the setting of the movie (England, 1983) and it then goes onto a montage that consists of clips about half a second that show England in that time and what was happening.
E)Genre
This film's genre is a hybrid of drama and crime, the drama is shown through the gritty theme of the film and what the character's go through is seen as drama like the kid being bullied. The crime is shown through the environment in the film plus what the social realism was like in the 80's.
F)Audience
The audience of the film is probably around the age of 18 as their isn't much in the film that I can see from the trailer that is unsuitable for people that age, but the violence in the film may be unsuitable for audience around 12 year old. The gender for the film is most likely male as the male audience are more likely to relate to the male characters in the film than the woman relating to the woman in the film.
A)Purpose
The purpose of this trailer is to promote the film so that it can attract the audience to watch the film, it is also made to entertain the audience, this is so it is more attracting to the audience.
B)Form
The form of this video is a film trailer, the films name is 'The Silence of the Lambs' and was directed by Jonathan Demme. I know it's a film trailer because it's non-linear meaning it isn't chronological as to not spoil the film for the audience.
C/D)Content and Meaning
One example of mise-en-scene is gesture and what a character does in the film, an example of this in the film trailer is when the female protagonist is locked in a cell and she turns around with a shocked expression on her face, this may denotes that she is startled, connoting that she is in danger. The next mise-en-scene example is lighting and this is when a clip is in low key lighting, but is shown through a night vision and it is shown through the perspective of 1st person who is reaching out to a women in the dark, this connotes that the woman is in danger as she doesn't know what's in the dark, but the audience does which may make them feel tension as they don't know what's going to happen to her. The final mise-en-scene feature is costume and an example is when the male antagonist is wearing a convict jumpsuit and this denotes this but connotes that he is dangerous otherwise he wouldn't be in a cell and wearing the costume. Next is sound and the diegetic example is dialogue, this is throughout the trailer and specific part is when a man is telling the protagonist that she said she wasn't easily spooked and then it cuts to a scene where the character is startled by the door closing behind her, maybe showing her as a timid, compared to the character at the end of the film and I believe this shows character building within the film. An example of non-diegetic sound in the trailer can be music which is an ambient tune throughout the whole trailer, and I think this is in there to build up the tension of the film, to show that it is a thriller, it goes well with the trailer because there are sound effects and narration, that could also be counted as non-diegetic sound because it isn't in the movie world, and the music makes these other sounds more spooky. Next is the camera work of the trailer, an example of angles in the trailer can be a high angle, this is when a man is walking behind the woman using night vision goggles to see her and is reaching out for her, this connotes that the man is more powerful and has the bigger advantage over the woman as she may be unaware of him standing behind her because it is dark, making the woman character vulnerable. An example of a shot type is a close up, and this is seen in the trailer when it has a close up of the antagonist staring into the camera, this is used to maybe spook the audience as it may intimidate the audience, which is what you want with an antagonist as they are typically the bad guy and you want the audience to know that. The final camera work is movement and this is example is a pan left, and this is when it is a point of view from the protagonist as she approaches the antagonist's cell, and as the camera moves, it is done slowly, and I think this is done to build up tension as it's a slow reveal and the trailer as well as the start of the movie build up the criminal to be this man who gets inside your head so they use this build up to show the man. Next is Editing, and one of the main editing techniques used in the trailer is quick cutting and I think that this was done to rapidly show single shots, this is done with a woman putting on make-up and then soon with a the criminal and protagonist's faces, I feel that this is done to represent the psychotic theme within the film, and to also represent mind washing and I think this is done mainly because its a psychotic thriller and they wanted the trailer to show that it is.The next editing feature is eye-line match which is shown when the protagonist is approaching and looking at the cell the criminal is in, this is done to maybe show that she is a little nervous to approach as this is done with the previously mentioned slow pan POV shot to the jail.
E)Genre
This film is a hybrid of the crime, drama and thriller genres as it shows conventions of them like the music in the trailer and film is very intense causing tension in the audience, they also use quick flashes of scenes with loud sounds which is an example of the thriller part of the film.
F)Audience
The audience for the film is mainly around the age of 18 as it definitely has some scene inappropriate for a younger age and this film probably has more of a female audience and that's because of the female protagonist that is rarely seen in films because of men being a strong stereotype, which means this film has use of binary opposition.
A)Purpose
The purpose of this trailer is to promote the film so that it can attract the audience to watch the film, it is also made to entertain the audience, this is so it is more attracting to the audience.
B)Form
The form of this video is a film trailer, the films name is 'Se7en' and was directed by David Fincher. I know it's a film trailer because it's non-linear meaning it isn't chronological as to not spoil the film for the audience.
C/D)Content and Meaning
The first example from mise-en-scene for 'Se7en' is a location and this is when a scene is shot at the a crime scene within the movie, this makes sense because the movie is based around two detectives and they would need to go to a crime scene as it's their job to investigate there. Then there's costume and the protagonist(s) are both wearing suites, this is typical for a detective to wear, plus is connotes that they are sensible and serious, which is what the movie wants the audience to feel about the characters. An example of gestures in the mise-en-scene of the film, is when one of the protagonists kicks open a door, this connotes that he is angry or that he's determined to solve the case and that he doesn't have time to mess about. The movie uses a lot of low key lighting and this is probably because the film is a thriller and the plot has a dark tone with murders and some gore, like for example when they find a dead body, the setting has very low key lighting.
An example of diegetic sound in this film is the dialogue by the two protagonists, sometimes it is overlapping different shots or sometimes it will be a shot of them actually talking, trailers tend to do the overlapping and the actual shot, whilst the actual film will just do dialogue with the actual shot, unless narrating a story or a flashback for example. A non-diegetic sound in this trailer is the ambient song in the background, it was being played when showing shots of them in a dark and eerie location, this adds to the tension in the trailer.
An example of angles in the camera work of the trailer is a low angle and that is when one protagonist kicks open a door, it is at a slight low angle and is connoting that the detective is powerful which goes well with the fact he kicks open a door. An example of a shot type in this trailer is a close up, and this is on one of the detectives face, when he says "Lets finish it" and because of the intone he gives with saying it, you can tell that this is supposed to be a serious moment in the film and a close up can show this by giving a clear view on his expression. The final camera work is movement and example of this in the trailer is a low to high angle tilt which is when the detectives find a dead body sat in a chair, and it starts at the feet and slowly tilts up as a flashlight comes into shot aimed at the body.
Finally, one example of an editing technique is fade to black, which is a transition and this is used when the incidental music goes from a steadily fast pitch and tone to a much slower one, and the shot is of a metronome being started and as it is done, that is when the music changes, because of this change and the diegetic sound of the metronome ticking, I think it's causing tension by doing a type of countdown, and seen as this film is about murder I assume it is doing this to do a type of countdown til the next death. Another editing technique shown is an eye line match, this is when one detective is explaining his theory about the murders to the chief of police and in the next shot it shows the chief of police looking back at him, this is showing dialogue and a conversation which is an example of how to use eye line match in a trailer or film.
E)Genre
This film is a hybrid of the crime, drama and mystery genres, from the trailer I can see that this film is probably more strongly in the mystery genre. For example the main protagonists are detectives and the trailer features music consisting of the same type of music from old detective shows in the 80's..
F)Audience
The audience is once again the age of 18 as the film contains a few inappropriate scenes that have to do with violence, as seen by shooting in the trailer. The main gender is going to be mainly male as the film has two male protagonists supporting the male stereotype.
A)Purpose
The purpose of this trailer is to promote the film so that it can attract the audience to watch the film, it is also made to entertain the audience, this is so it is more attracting to the audience.
B)Form
The form of this video is a film trailer, the films name is 'The Suicide Theory' and was directed by Dru Brown. I know it's a film trailer because it's non-linear meaning it isn't chronological as to not spoil the film for the audience.
C/D)Content and Meaning
The first example of Mise-en-scene is Location, the most notable is the Hospital shown multiple times in the trailer. Next is costume, and in most scenes the leading actor is wearing a black leather jacket and jeans, the black maybe connoting death which fits into the theme of this film. One Gesture shown in this film is one guy moving a folded napkin to another guy, the napkin has a message on it, connoting that something secret and confidential is happening. An example of lighting that is in this trailer is low key lighting, this is because most of the scenes where it is, is when one of the actors is trying to die or be killed. The final example is a prop, and one prop that stands out a lot is the gun the killer uses, this definitely connotes death as it is used to kill someone.
One example of non-diegetic sound in the trailer is a slow paced tune that is meant to be melancholic and dramatic, which is there to enhance the tension and dramatic scenes within the trailer. An example of diegetic sound however is dialogue, this is heard a lot through the trailer, an example would be when the shot faded to black and the dialogue continued, this made the dialogue and shot a bit more dramatic and made it emphasise the dialogue more.
The first example of camera work, are angles, there is a part showing the guy who wants to die in high angle, the killer is talking down to him and so the other guy looks powerless and that he can't do anything. An example of a shot type could be a close up, this can be seen when the guy who wants to die, is in a hospital with his face in bandages and full of scars, they probably did a close up in this shot to show how much pain he is in, maybe making the viewer feel sympathy for him. The final piece of camera work is movement, this can be shown in a quick shot when the camera is tracking to the left with a mans feet whilst he is walking.
The final example is Editing, the first example of this is shown a lot in the trailer and this is jump cutting, as there are many shots in the trailer that are put into a kind of montage that also fits with the tempo of the incidental sound playing over it. The final example of editing is title graphics, it's not necessarily a title like the film's name for example, but the trailer showing the movies awards and quotes from critics, this is there to give reassurance to the audience that it's a good film, it also shows the films name as a title too, which all of these title graphics are synced to the music.
E)Genre
This film's genre is a drama as it talks about subjects that people can be sensitive about and it also is a bit philosophical with the film talking about destiny and that fates are tied together.
F)Audience
The audiences target age for this film is older than 18 as the film is rated R meaning that it contains a lot of violence and because it touches on sensitive subjects. The gender is most likely men because the audience can relate to the male protagonist/ antagonist in the film.
